Image
In this video, I will examine and breakdown Sony's new PlayStation Plus service which is set to debut in Asia regions next week and the US on June 13th. I'll go into each of the 3 tiers: Essentials, Extra, and Premium and how it compares to Xbox GamePass versions. A PlayStation Gamer's Perspective on The Microsoft Activison Buyout

Image
Microsoft dropped a bombshell last week by announcing that they intend to buy Activision Blizzard for a whopping $68.7B! In one fell swoop, Microsoft increases it's studio count to over 30 and will now own the #1 selling game on PlayStation every year: Call of Duty. This type of news is once in a generation and the impact to this can fundamentally change gaming as we know it. Is this the continuation of massive consolidation in gaming? What does this mean for PlayStation going forward? Come check out my video as I dig in!

Home Theater Story: Do Subwoofer Cables Really Matter?

Home Theater Story: Do Subwoofer Cables Really Matter? When building out a world class audio system, is it worth investing in high end cables? The verdict is decidedly split on that one with some saying cables don't make any difference and other proclaiming that a high end system requires similarly high end audio cables. For much of the past 3 years, I've been wracking my brain around a perceiving deficiency of bass coming from one of my dual subwoofers. The overall response did not seem as even as it should from 2 subs. After trying just about everything to try and fix the problem, it occurred to me that the only remaining difference between the 2 subs was the RCA cable used to connect back to my preamp. Could that really be the source of my problem? Can cables make a difference on the perceived sound of my subwoofers. Check out the video to get the full story and find out the answer!

[RANT] Why It's Not Anti-Consumer For Sony To Exclude PS4 Controllers on...

Image
Are people really suggesting that Sony is wrong and anti-consumer by not allowing PS4 controllers to work on PS5 to play PS5 games?! That is how every console generation has functioned for the past 40+ years. Allow me to break down why that expectation is ridiculous: As many have said this is how virtually every previous console generation has gone. New console -> new games -> new controller. Even when a controller change may be as simple as adding a button or two, it still was a requirement for playing the new games on the console Sony is still allowing PS4 games to be played on PS5 with the DualShock4 controller. The PS4 controller and all it's games were designed with those specific capabilities in mind. It makes sense that since the PS5 will be backwards compatible with PS4 games, that you can use the older controller if you choose. If THIS was not the case, I can somewhat see people complaining here about the strategy being "anti-consumer" and such (i.e if...

Real Talk: Gaming Hardware Is About Maximizing Efficiency Not TFLOPs

Image
The discussion on which next gen console is more "powerful" has been heating up lately with most believing the Xbox Series X to be more powerful solely on higher spec counts in certain categories. Yet some folks counter that with how the custom hardware in PS5 will alleviate some of it's relative performance deficit and the difference will be minimal. Before I proceed, let's really think about what we mean by "powerful" in this context because it could mean several different things. People tend to just toss that number around and say "system X has more TFLOPs so it's more powerful" or "System Y can run at higher framerates so it's more powerful". It is an important distinction in the context of the next generation consoles since both system have advantages in different areas. For this discussion, I want to focus on actual game performance as the goal. Meaning which system can actually process the most data in the shortest ...

Is the PS5 GPU Really Underpowered - What Can We Really Expect

Image
How many people believe that Sony under delivered with the PS5's graphical capabilities based on the 10.3 TFLOP metric? Do you subscribe to the notion that the PS5's GPU is nothing more than a RX 5700/XT card or that it's only on par with midrange GPUs today? This post is about providing real data and educated estimations to dispel the notion that the PS5 GPU is only a "midrange" GPU that is not on par with today's top tier commercial GPUs. Indeed, looking at the TFLOP number in isolation is indeed very misleading and the truth about the actual performance of the GPU points paints a very different picture. I know many of you don't know me but I can say that I am not just pulling this info from nowhere. I have over 15 years experience working in gaming and have spent nearly 5 years of my career doing critical analysis of GPU performance. Take it for what it is. Before I begin, a full disclaimer: this post is not about a comparison to or commentary on the...

AMD Navi GPU Impressions: Did AMD Deliver The Next Gen Goods?

Image
Come check out my latest video on AMD next generation graphics processors called "Navi". The RDNA architecture it uses promised to deliver an unprecedented level of gaming performance and is the first truly new architecture from AMD in nearly a decade. This technology will not only power the next generation of AMD GPUs on PC but is also the underlying graphics technology powering both next generation consoles from Sony and Microsoft. How has it improved over their previous generation architecture called GCN? How do the latest AMD GPUs stack up to Nvidia's latest cards? Will AMD finally put up a fight against Nvidia's juggernaut in the GPU segment? If you are into gaming hardware technology at all and want to know more about what to expect from the graphics in our future games, this is one you don't want to miss!

Image
Check out my latest video breaking down the TFLOP metric and where it can go wrong in evaluating game performance. PlayStation 5 Spec Reveal: The Story Behind the Numbers

Image
It's coming! Yes, the next generation of video games is coming soon. We are at the stage when numerous leaks from industry "insiders" start to paint the picture of what the next generation of games will be about. We've seen many leaks over the past few months, particularly on the next PlayStation (i.e. PS5) but also on the next Xbox console (codename: Anaconda). But last week something very interesting happened: on a seemingly random Tuesday morning in April, we awoke to new trending article on wire with the headline " Exclusive: What to Expect From Sony's Next-Gen PlayStation ". While at first glance it seemed like just another article from a supposed "leak" to be taken with a grain of salt, reading the first line of the article revealed a quote from the lead system architect himself Mark Cerny. Whoa! Is this official information from Sony? Indeed it was and it took the gaming media by complete surprise. While little information was actuall...

Xbox Scorpio vs PS4 Pro: The Truth About What To Expect

Image
There has been a lot of misinterpretation by the media and consumers alike regarding the recently announced Xbox Scorpio specs and how it compares to the PS4 Pro. I've been hearing things like "Xbox Scorpio's massive power advantage..." or "the Xbox Scorpio specs blow the PS4 Pro's specs away..." etc which is not true. There is no question that the Scorpio will have more raw horsepower than the PS4 Pro, but if the reveal by Digital Foundry told us one thing, it's that the Xbox Scorpio is not a radical departure in hardware from the current consoles on the market including the Xbox One, PS4, and PS4 Pro. It essentially uses the same components from the same vendor (AMD) but just has faster versions of those components. It is basically a "supercharged" Xbox One/Ps4 but not anything fundamentally new. That's not to say games won't indeed look best on Scorpio but if you are thinking the difference will be massive over any console...

Predicting the Features Of the PlayStation 5

Image
In my article "Top 5 Reasons Next Gen Gaming is Taking So Long", I mentioned that the rapidly evolving technology landscape was a big reason for extended console cycle seen in the Xbox360/PS3 generation. Now in 2017 we are more than 3 years into the 8th generation console cycle (PS4/Xbox One/Wii U) and there is an increasingly clear picture on where the future of gaming is heading.Tech like 4K, Virtual Reality, and cloud computing/streaming are all going to be a huge part of the future of gaming. While PS4 will introduce many of these capabilities, they won't be full fleshed out during the console's life cycle and we will not see the full realization of these technologies until the PS5. We also have the new wrinkle of console refreshes in PS4 Pro and Xbox Scorpio that are promising higher resolution versions of existing PS4/XB1 games with a focus on 4K. The reality is that neither platform will likely make 4K the standard for console games but will instead serve ...
