[RANT] Why It's Not Anti-Consumer For Sony To Exclude PS4 Controllers on...

Are people really suggesting that Sony is wrong and anti-consumer by not allowing PS4 controllers to work on PS5 to play PS5 games?! That is how every console generation has functioned for the past 40+ years. Allow me to break down why that expectation is ridiculous:

  1. As many have said this is how virtually every previous console generation has gone. New console -> new games -> new controller. Even when a controller change may be as simple as adding a button or two, it still was a requirement for playing the new games on the console
  2. Sony is still allowing PS4 games to be played on PS5 with the DualShock4 controller. The PS4 controller and all it's games were designed with those specific capabilities in mind. It makes sense that since the PS5 will be backwards compatible with PS4 games, that you can use the older controller if you choose. If THIS was not the case, I can somewhat see people complaining here about the strategy being "anti-consumer" and such (i.e if Sony forced folks to use only PS5 controllers with PS4 games on the system). But fortunately, that is NOT the case
  3. There is NO additional cost associated with this strategy! You can use either a PS4 or PS5 controller to play PS4 games on the PS5 system. As is custom, every PS5 system will ship with at least 1 DualSense. And if you still have your PS4 and PS4 games you want to play, it goes without saying that you probably have at least one DualShock4 controller. So you can use either controller that you already have, with no additional purchase necessary. Again, IF it was the case that this strategy required you to spend extra money, I could see the argument
  4. For folks who bought expensive 3rd party controllers, again that's on them. This is how generations have gone for over 4 decades now. Why would someone buy an expensive 3rd party controller for a current system and expect that they would be able to continue to use it on some future system that has not even been designed yet? If you bought a PS4 controller, the expectation and only assurance is that it will work on a PS4 with PS4 games. If it in fact does work on other devices (i.e. PC, future console etc), that's a bonus. But it shouldn't be expected
